Battery Chargers

The best battery chargers for diesel trucks

Most diesel pickups carry two batteries wired in parallel. That one fact changes the charger you need more than the engine does.

How we assessed these: picks are selected from manufacturer specifications, current retailer listings and published owner feedback — not from hands-on testing of every unit. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, it is left out rather than estimated.

Short answer

For a diesel pickup, buy the NOCO GENIUS10. Its 10 amps and 230 amp-hour rating cover the two batteries wired in parallel that most diesel trucks carry — a pair that can total well over 120 amp-hours, which is where a 5-amp charger runs out of range rather than merely taking longer.

A diesel engine needs more cranking energy than a gas engine of the same size, because compression ignition means the starter has to turn a much higher compression ratio. Manufacturers answer that with two batteries in parallel rather than one enormous battery, and a parallel pair behaves as a single battery of double the amp-hours at the same voltage. If each battery is 70 amp-hours, the charger is being asked to serve 140.

Capacity ranges are each manufacturer's published figures. The "covers" column is our reading of those figures against a two-battery diesel installation — count your own batteries and read their amp-hour ratings before buying.

The GENIUS10 is the pick because it is the first unit in NOCO's consumer line whose rated capacity clears a realistic parallel pair with headroom, and because 10 amps halves the charge time against a 5-amp unit on a bank that size. How long to charge a car battery has the arithmetic; on 140 amp-hours from deeply discharged, the difference between 5 and 10 amps is a weekend and a night.

Charging two batteries: in place or separately?

In place, across the pair, is the normal and usually correct answer. Batteries in parallel share a common voltage, so a charger connected to one battery's terminals charges both — which is also why a single failing battery in a pair drags the good one down with it.

  1. Charge the pair in place for routine recovery. Connect to the designated terminals, let the charger run, and let the bank equalize.
  2. Charge them separately if you suspect one has failed. A bad cell in one battery shows up as a pair that never reaches full. Disconnect and test each one on its own.
  3. Replace in pairs, not singly. A new battery paired with a tired one is pulled down to the tired one's level. This is the most common and most expensive mistake on a two-battery truck.
  4. Check both for the same chemistry. A flooded battery paired with an AGM is a mismatch the charging system cannot resolve — see AGM battery chargers.
  5. Note the amp-hour rating of each. That is the number the charger specification has to clear, doubled.

When the problem is not charging

If a diesel cranks slowly and the batteries read low every morning, a bigger charger treats a symptom. The three real candidates are a battery that has lost capacity, an alternator not keeping up, and a parasitic drain. The Schumacher SC1281 is on this page largely because it carries a built-in battery and alternator tester alongside its 30-amp boost charge and 100-amp engine start, which means it answers the diagnostic question and the recovery question with one tool.

It is a garage tool, though — mains-powered, bulky, and useless on a shoulder. How to tell if a car battery is bad is the diagnostic order if you would rather use a meter, and jump starters for diesel trucks covers the away-from-home half of the problem.

The truck that sits

A work truck that does not move for weeks at a time is a maintainer problem rather than a charger problem, and it is a common pattern with diesels used seasonally. The Battery Tender Plus at 1.25 amps holds a battery full indefinitely with a 10-year warranty behind it. One caution: its automotive rating is up to 80 amp-hours, so on a parallel pair treat it as a maintainer for a bank already full, not a recovery charger.

And if the truck sits outdoors in winter, add the cold to the picture. NOCO publishes a -4 F operating range and a thermal sensor on the GENIUS line; most chargers publish nothing at all. Battery chargers for cold weather covers that specification and why it matters.

The picks in full

Hands working on machinery in a garage

1. Best overall for a diesel

NOCO GENIUS10

NOCO · Best for several vehicles or a deep-cycle bank

Twice the current of the GENIUS5 and nearly twice the capacity range — 10 amps up to 230 Ah, which is where RV, marine and multi-vehicle households land.

Published specifications

Charging current
10 A DC source
Battery voltages
6 V and 12 V source
Capacity range
Up to 230 Ah source
Operating temperature
-4 to 104 °F (-20 to 40 °C) source
Max consumption
150 W source
Weight
3.33 lb (1.5 kg) source
Warranty
3-year limited source

What works

  • 10 A halves the charge time on a flat car battery against a 5 A unit
  • The 230 Ah range covers deep-cycle RV and marine batteries the GENIUS5 cannot
  • Same -4 °F cold rating and 3-year warranty as the smaller GENIUS units

What does not

  • 10 A into a small motorcycle battery is more current than it wants — use a 1 A or 2 A unit there
  • Heavier and pricier than a GENIUS5 for a household with one car

Skip it if

Not the right charger for a single motorcycle, ATV or lawn-tractor battery. Small batteries want small current.

2. Best when it will not take a charge

Schumacher SC1281

Schumacher · Best for fast charging plus engine-start assist

A shop-style charger for the garage: a 6-amp automatic charge, a 30-amp boost and a 100-amp engine start, for people who would rather fix the battery than carry a pack.

Published specifications

Charging current
2 A to 6 A, microprocessor-controlled source
Boost charge
30 A source
Engine start
100 A source
Battery voltages
6 V and 12 V, detected automatically source
Input voltage
120 V AC — must stay plugged in source
Chemistries
Standard lead-acid, AGM and gel source
Reconditioning
Desulfation mode source
Testing
Built-in battery and alternator tester source
Safety
Reverse-polarity protection, automatic shutoff source

What works

  • A 30 A boost charge puts a flat battery back in hours rather than overnight
  • 100 A engine start covers the case where the battery is too far gone to take a charge quickly
  • Automatic 6 V / 12 V detection reduces the chance of selecting the wrong mode
  • The built-in battery and alternator tester tells you whether charging is even the right answer

What does not

  • Mains-powered and bulky — a garage tool, not a trunk tool
  • High-current charging is harder on an ageing battery than a slow charge
  • Engine-start mode is no substitute for a portable pack away from home

Skip it if

Useless on the roadside — there is no outlet on the shoulder of a highway. This is the home half of the problem; a lithium pack is the away half.

3. Best for a single-battery truck

NOCO GENIUS5

NOCO · Best for one car, charging and maintaining

The single most useful charger for one vehicle: 5 amps, 6 V and 12 V, batteries up to 120 Ah, and it can be left connected indefinitely.

Published specifications

Charging current
5 A DC source
Battery voltages
6 V and 12 V source
Capacity range
Up to 120 Ah source
Operating temperature
-4 to 104 °F (-20 to 40 °C) source
Max consumption
75 W source
Weight
1.5 lb (0.68 kg) source
Cable length
77 in (195 cm) DC cable and clamps source
Warranty
3-year limited source

What works

  • 5 A recharges a car battery overnight and then holds it — one unit does both jobs
  • Rated down to -4 °F, so it works in an unheated garage
  • The 77-inch cable reaches from a wall outlet to most engine bays without an extension
  • 3-year warranty, against 1 year on the jump-starter line

What does not

  • 5 A is slow for a deeply discharged large battery — a 100 Ah battery is an all-nighter
  • The 120 Ah ceiling rules out larger deep-cycle banks

Skip it if

Not enough charger if you are reviving deep-cycle RV or marine batteries. Step up to the GENIUS10 and its 230 Ah range.

4. Best for a truck that sits

Battery Tender Plus 12V 1.25A

Battery Tender · Best for long-term storage on a car battery

The storage-maintainer benchmark: 1.25 amps, automotive batteries up to 80 Ah, a four-step program and a 10-year warranty behind it.

Published specifications

Charging current
1.25 A at 12 V source
Battery capacity
Automotive batteries up to 80 Ah source
Chemistries
12 V lead-acid, flooded, AGM and gel cell source
Warranty
10-year source

What works

  • A 10-year warranty is the longest in this category by a wide margin
  • 1.25 A is low enough to leave connected through a winter without heat build-up
  • Covers flooded, AGM and gel without a chemistry switch to get wrong

What does not

  • 1.25 A is a maintainer current — it will not revive a deeply flat battery quickly
  • The 80 Ah ceiling rules out large truck and deep-cycle batteries
  • No 6 V mode on the standard Plus; that is a different model in the line

Skip it if

Not the unit for recovering a flat battery on a deadline. Buy it for the car that sits, not the car that stranded you this morning.

Key takeaways

  • Two batteries in parallel act as one battery of double the amp-hours — size the charger to the total.
  • NOCO GENIUS10: 10 A, rated to 230 Ah, which clears a realistic diesel pair with margin.
  • A 5-amp charger is a single-battery tool; on a pair it is marginal rather than just slow.
  • Charge in place for routine recovery; charge separately when you suspect one battery has failed.
  • Always replace in pairs. A new battery paired with a tired one is dragged down to it.
  • Slow cranking every morning is a diagnosis, not a charger-size problem.

Common questions

What size battery charger do I need for a diesel truck?
Enough rated capacity to cover both batteries together. A diesel pickup usually carries two batteries in parallel, which behave as one battery of double the amp-hours — often well over 120 Ah. The NOCO GENIUS10's 10 amps and 230 Ah rating clears that with margin.
Can you charge both diesel truck batteries at once?
Yes, and it is normally the right approach. Batteries wired in parallel share a voltage, so a charger connected to the designated terminals serves both. Charge them separately only when you suspect one has a failed cell and want to test each in isolation.
Should I replace both diesel truck batteries at the same time?
Yes. A new battery paired in parallel with a tired one is pulled down to the weaker battery's level, so you lose most of the benefit of the new one and shorten its life. Replace in pairs, matched in chemistry and rating.
Is a 5-amp charger enough for a diesel truck?
For a single-battery truck, yes. For a parallel pair totaling more than 120 amp-hours, it is outside the GENIUS5's rated capacity range rather than simply slower — step up to a 10-amp unit.
