Short answer
Buy a charger with an explicit AGM mode or automatic chemistry detection. AGM batteries want a different charge voltage from flooded lead-acid, and charging an AGM on a flooded profile leaves it chronically undercharged, which shortens its life.
AGM — absorbent glass mat — is still lead-acid, but the electrolyte is held in fiberglass matting rather than sitting as free liquid. That changes its internal resistance, its charge acceptance and the voltage it wants, and it is why chargers have a mode for it.

Do you have an AGM battery?
- If the car has start-stop, almost certainly yes — an AGM or an EFB (enhanced flooded battery). Conventional flooded batteries do not survive the cycling that start-stop imposes.
- Check the label. AGM batteries are usually marked AGM, VRLA, or "sealed, non-spillable".
- No filler caps is a strong hint, though some sealed flooded batteries also lack them.
- Look for a stop-start or AGM sticker near the battery or in the owner's manual.
- If you are unsure, do not guess. Charging a flooded battery on an AGM profile is less harmful than the reverse, but the correct answer is on the label.

The key asymmetry is the last two rows. A flooded battery overcharged loses water you can sometimes replace. A sealed AGM overcharged loses it permanently, because there is no filler cap.
That asymmetry is why a proper AGM mode matters more than it sounds. It is not only about reaching full — it is about not exceeding the voltage a sealed battery can tolerate, on a battery where the damage cannot be undone.
Lithium is a separate question
Some vehicles and many powersports applications now use lithium iron phosphate batteries, which need a genuinely different charge profile again, and which most lead-acid chargers should not be used on at all. If you have a LiFePO4 battery, use a charger with an explicit lithium mode, and do not improvise.

- How do I know if my car has an AGM battery?

- Is it safe to use a desulfation mode on an AGM battery?
